What matters is the actual pixel dimensions. You can increase the resolution with Resampling OFF and have no loss of quality whatsoever. The ppi comes into play when you go to print.

My guess is the resolution is 72 ppi but the size in inches is really big, like 30 or 40 inches wide, correct? All this means is that all the original pixels are still there, just the size of the pixels has changed. Changing the resolution without resampling would be the thing to do.

dpi / ppi does not mean anything on an image on the computer. Some monitors are 72 dpi, other monitors 96 and some are 144 dpi. It depends on if you run a 17" monitor at 800×600, 1024×768 or 1600×1200 pixels.

An image only has a dpi resolution when printed.

The is a random value between 1 and 32767 assigned to a field on JPEG pictures, which is names "dpi" or "ppi".

The Canon A80 has a sensor of size 7.18mm x 5.32mm, and since it does a resolution of 2272×1704 pixels, it has a native resolution of 2272 / 7.18 = 316 pixels per millimeter = 8037 pixels per inch. —
