I am trying to do the swap over from Freehand to InDesign, I’ve imported a greyscale tiff , usually in Freehand I would click transparent in the document menu and the white background would disappear, how do I achieve this in InDesign?

Select the picture then, in the Effects palette, select "Multiply" from the pop-up list (which by default will be se to "Normal"). —
