I am using an olympus c4000z, photoshop, and Ultrasharpen. Would it be preferable to turn sharpening off in the camera and do the work with Ultrasharpen in Photoshop, or to do the sharpening in the camera instead?

I prefer to do it in Photoshop. This gives me more control to how much and where to apply sharpening.

Cameras are good at taking pictures, providing there is some intelligence used by the person taking the photograph. They are useless at making decisions about how your photograph should look. Do it yourself in software. 🙂

absolutely, without question, 100% turn it off in the camera and do it in photoshop. use the unsharp mask.

this will provide you with an original image which can later be altered to your own tastes, and it will also allow the sharpening to be to your own, specifically ideal specfifications.

this is true of ALL "post-capture" alterations – just like it’s silly to use black and white mode with a digital camera, because you can always make a color image black and white later.

it is ALWAYS best to have a TRUE original image – any alteration can be done later on, and with much greater precision and quality.

In general I sharpen in the camera, though I do apply additional sharpening as necessary in Photoshop, for example if I resample the image or if I intend to print 8×10 or larger.

Although theoretically better results are possible sharpening after the fact, my own convenience is important to me, and sharpening in the camera saves an extra processing step. Not to mention that sharpening in the camera makes it less likely that I will forget to sharpen altogether. 🙂 —
