RAW problems in PS CS after Nikon Capture installed

OK, a little problem with CS and RAW. I’ve been using the Adobe RAW plug-ins (upgrading as they have become available) to work on NEF (Nikon) RAW files. No problem until recently. Every time I’ve opened an NEF into CS, I got the entire, multi-tabbed menu.

Then, I installed Nikon Capture 4.1.x and got a new D70. When I opened some of the NEFs from the D70, all I got was the single pane, non-tabbed RAW converter dialog box. I downloaded the 2.4 beta, and installed it in place of my 2.3 plug-in. Still, just the single pane converter. I then opened some of the older NEFs, that had worked just fine, and NOW they too come in with the single pane dialog box.

It appears that Nikon Capture has done something to PS CS, regarding the RAW files. The NEFs are now associated with Nikon Capture. Before I change my associations and maybe uninstall Nikon Capture, I wanted to get some thoughts from the NG. Anyone else experience these problems? Any thoughts?

Right now, my first action will be to read your posts, then change the association to PS, then uninstall. I want to have Nikon Capture on the laptop, but also want to open my NEFs directly into PS, as before.

TIA
Hunt

Everyone who’s tried to install both PSCS and the Nikon NEF software on the same machine. It’s a well-known issue.

Any thoughts?

Heck, I was hoping you wouldn’t say that. If that is what it comes to, then Nikon Capture will go on a non-CS machine, though I had planned on using it as an intervelometer for the D70. Dang, I hate that these guys can’t get along. I may just do NEFs on the workstation.

Thanks for the reply,

Can be fixed.

Delete the Nikon NEF plugin.8Bi from the PS Plugins\….\File Formats folder. Nikon Capture put it there.

Brian,

Got it. Someone in rec.photo.slr-systems mentioned the Nikon NEF plug-in, and I just moved it to my "Old Plug-ins" folder, basically as you suggested. All is now right with the world, at least as far as my NEFs and CS go. A note: I first had the Old Plug-ins as a sub-folder to Adobe\\\\Plug-ins\File Formats folder and CS went directly to the Nikon .8bi before the Adobe RAW plug-in, so I moved the sub-folder out of Plug-ins completely for it to work.

Thanks for the response,

Nikon-View and Nikon Picture Project put similar plugins into PS (for those using the software). Need to be deleted too.

Good to know, even though I’m a Canon user. I prefer not to give half-right advice.

Thanks. I think that I had loaded NV onto this laptop, before CS, so the only plugin that seemed to be causing the problem was from Nikon Capture. As stated, it was NOT located where the other File Format plugins were, and took a bit of searching to locate it. With the removal of that one, all is working – thanks. I’ll also be on the lookout, when I do updates for Capture, to keep this from happening again.

But, the advice was correct as to problem. At least there was a solution, without removing Capture. I too have some Canon software on the machine, and it seems better behaved regarding PS CS, though that might be because my wife’s Canon doesn’t shoot RAW, and neither does my DV camera. Have you had any problems with the higher-end Canon software? These things are good to know, because one sees them pop up so often. I’ve seen complaints about the " limited" dialog box for RAW in CS (maybe all Nikon users), and never understood the problem, AND never saw an answer to THEIR questions – now I know, and from experience too!

Thanks,
Hunt

Oh sure, but –

At least there was a
solution, without removing Capture.

If you like Capture, you might not appreciate finding out later that you can indeed use it still.

As I said, half-right advice. I’m not beating myself up over it, it’s just good to know the full story.

No, but then I don’t touch it. Images come through a card reader, are filed on big hard drives and are converted via ACR. Indexing is handled by Thumbs Plus, which is about second to none in that department.

These things are good to know, because one sees them pop up so often. I’ve seen complaints about the " limited" dialog box for RAW in CS (maybe all Nikon users), and never understood the problem, AND never saw an answer to THEIR questions – now I know, and from experience too!

Well, there is another possible issue – a lot of people forgot to check the system requirements for CS and have their screens set to too low a resolution, resulting in truncated dialogs.

Carlos, you have the same "problem" described by Hunt. PS is using the Nikon plugin rather than Camera Raw.

Brian, you are right. I have transfered the file (Nikon Nef plug-in) to a temp folder and opened a Nikon Nef picture in PS CS Camera RAW and that really opened in a new window that I never suspected it would exist. OK, using the Camera RAW is a little faster but I don

I don’t think so. Which-ever one you prefer Carlos.

Nikon Capture has the most choices for the initial processing of RAW files in my opinion. Then open the file in PS.
