Hello,
I am a newbie to this forum but I am looking for help with photoshop. Do you know how I can make things automatic. For example I need to make all my image files 250×167 pixels including a 20 pixels border for some website. Do you know how I can downsize them automatically, first and add the border automatically second?

thanks

this would be very easy to do with an action… if you know how to create them.
if not, send me an email from the website below and I will try to help if I can.

I am not sure how to create them, but there seems to be one already created in my ps which will do the job, as for the border, I guess it is better to put it with the browser, that will make the image smaller.

What do you reckon is a good size for thumbnails (mine are 250×167 at the moment) and how many thumbnail per page can I put, you think?

I think my images page is too big as it stands

This is entirely up to you. I prefer to add borders, etc in the action, and you can also do some neat effects like bevels, drop shadow, etc and get consistent results.
To create an action, show the actions pallette, click the record button, and do your changes to one photo, then click stop. Then use file>automate>batch to run the whole folder full of images through the same action. Be sure to back up your originals first, just in case!

What do you reckon is a good size for thumbnails (mine are 250×167 at the moment) and how many thumbnail per page can I put, you think?

You could probably go a little smaller, but I am sure opinions vary, and it really depends upon your ultimate purposes and what the photos look like depending on the subject.

For more info, just google "photoshop actions" or "actions tutorial"

good luck

OK thanks. I’ll try that. I am looking for very simple effects, though.

Actually, I don’t have much choice: my website is organised in such a way that it is made of 9 bricks of 250×167.
So the only way I can show a smaller picture is by putting a border around it.
At the moment the border is 5, which means that the picture is 240×147. Or should be, because actually the thumbnails are the full size pictures reduced by
the browser.

www.davidranc.com, if you want to understand what I am trying to say (in a confusing manner).
But I’ll scrap the images page soon and
rebuild it entirely (a) with proper thumbnails, (b) with no more than 6 images per page,
(c) with only good pictures. THe ones on here haven’t been corrected, they were just meant
to be there to show the people I took pictures of. But my publisher is insisting that I should
put less, correct them with PS etc. So I need to rethink the organisation.

For more info, just google "photoshop actions" or "actions tutorial"

thanks a lot

good luck

I think that size looks great. Nice simple layout, too.

Try the "save for web" option and save jpgs in the lowest setting that still looks good.
this will give smaller file sizes for faster loading.

nice photos

Alright, I’ll keep it like that.

Nice simple layout, too.

Thanks, that was my point: make something simple but efficient (not sure where to put a visit book now and a blog now though). Now I wonder whether I should do all my pages so that they only have 6 pictures (therefore there would not be any scrolling and the page would be less heavy) or I should not mind if they are used.

Try the "save for web" option and save jpgs in the lowest setting that still

The pictures on the page are actually not thumbnails at the moment. Now I can do them automatically, I will upgrade that. (or maybe it will wait the next major change)

nice photos

Thanks you. I barely retouched them via photoshop though. They come straight from the scanner. I may improve the ones for the portfolio section in my future website, though. If I can manage!

How do you center top-to-bottom like that?
I do most of my sites centered side to side, but the vertical centering is very nice.

on that note, you could probably get away with a few white text links below the bottom row of photos,
with a link to a separate guest book or blog page – they would stand out nicely without breaking the layout.

You mean: the main frame?

I cheat only slightly by creating a frame which is 100% of the screen, then I fill it with another frame which is aligned both vertically and horizontaly because I put it in a cell.

<table width="100%" height="100%" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"
border="0">

<td valign="middle" align="center"> <table width="767" height="501" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"

I "stole" the original code from www.jmarr.com because I liked it. I acknowledged that on "à propos du site"

on that note, you could probably get away with a few white text links below
the bottom row of photos,

do you mean whit text on black background or white background? My main problem is different browsers react differently to the code I write so sometimes the background is black (mozilla), sometimes it is white (explorer/opera)…

with a link to a separate guest book or blog page – they would stand out nicely without breaking the layout.

I was more thinking of putting the guestbook and blog in "à propos du site", where I would put a site map too.
I may do a different site map for the image site though. (The image site is actually independent)

I don’t want the link to the blog to be too obvious (I have started writing it but it’s more something I write for me than for other people), and I am not sure I want a guestbook. If I do have one, I am not sure where to put it.

aha!
good one… I will look for a chance to use that method of centering.

I see a black background (firefox)… but I think if you specify a background color in your code, or create a small black square gif file and use that as a background image (tiled) it would make it black for everyone.
