I like to save my work in iterations using a, b, c etc. suffix. Every time I open the save or save as dialogue the files are presented in as ‘list’ and sorted alphabetically but I need them to be presented as ‘details’ and sorted by date ascending. This happens across applications so it is probably not a PS issue. This is very annoying; I get tired of selecting details and sorting by date ascending every single time I want to save a version. Does anyone know how to configure the save dialogue so it defaults to details and sorts by date ascending?

Thanks,
Ron

I think I should have said date descending. I want the most recently modified files to be at the top.

You could try out the utilities listed by googling for
save dialog details

WindoZe XP is broken in that regard. The checkbox to ‘remember folder views’ does not work.

I have wanted the same thing for ages and just gave up and use Bridge and Version Que. But I will look about again for alternatives, including something that will do intelligent versioning.

I may not understand what you are doing, but it seems that if you save the first modification as 123z, the second as 123y, and so on working backwards through the alphabet it would do what you want.

I found this:
http://www.hyperionics.com/files/downloads.asp
It takes a little getting used to but it’s free, low profile and doing want I wanted it to do. So far it works across all the applications I have tested. One cool thing is that it has its own ‘open recent’ options. I’m a big fan of open recent because I work by project so this will allow me to cross projects. I will see if it behaves itself.

Thanks to everyone for their help

Btw, that link may require a cookie. If it does not work just google FileBox eXtender.

Thanks for doing the leg work, Ron. I’m installing it now. I’ve been putting up with chasing folders over and over again for years. —

Sure thing.
It’s interesting that they say this utility also works with Vista. Can we infer from that that Vista save dialogs still do not inherit attributes from folder settings? I think that’s unlikely. Next time I’m on my Mom’s laptop I will check it out.
I am still trying to come up with a coherent global and local naming strategy. It’s not just names but I can’t decide on a basic structure for how project related files of different types should be organized. Should an excel spreadsheet used to track 2d textures for a 3d character be stored with my spreadsheets, my textures or my 3d project. Adobe has its way, Office has its way, Autodesk has its way and XP has its way. Not to mention my little shareware doodads that each have their own little idiosyncrasies. Bridge had the right idea but the implementation was lacking – I can’t even sort by PSD in there and that’s an Adobe file type. This has become like the remote control situation with home entertainment centers – where the universal remote leaves one or two buttons on the other 5 remotes inaccessible so I end up with six must-use remotes. You must have to stay very disciplined with a project on the scale of Curvemeister.

And don’t even get me started about placed linked and embedded files in Illustrator!

In general the type of file is not very interesting, so I keep folders for each of the projects and sub-projects that make up a product, and mix file types in the same folder. Sometimes this means duplicating files. This is typically 100’s of files, so it can be a real mess to unravel. One of the more important things to keep sanity as you get 100’s of files is source control. I can’t work unless I have an effortless way to save versions, and keep duplicated files in sync, even propagating changes to other copies with a variety of options. Check out Perforce.com – it’s free for one developer, provided you have Linux or NT to run the server on.

For Photographs I use ACDSee, which allows organization by keyword and a variety of other attributes. Each shoot is in its own folder by date. ACDSee helps, but it’s not a complete solution. Many of my images are simply lost until I stumble across them. What I need is something that will find a vaguely remembered photograph – a magnolia bud for example, in half sunlight – instantly with no effort on my part before, after or during the process. If you find one of those be sure to let me know.

So far I’m enjoying the folder utility. Thanks again.

Mike, you apparently find Version Que inadequate for source control. Can you tell us why?

I haven’t tried it. Version Que is designed for managing image handling and workflow, and it is probably excellent for that job.

I do use ACDSee to organize my images. At the time I did a survey of organizers, Bridge was simply too slow and cranky to be useful. Picasa would have done the job (and was free), but it had no provision for searching offline media. I narrowed the field down to ACDSee and ThumbsPlus, either of which would have been satisfactory, and settled on ACDSee because of the speed. I am now, for better or worse, married to ACDSee, since I now have many hours invested in the cross-reference information. It I were starting from scratch Bridge would be a contender, as well as the excellent DigitalPro program.

The source control I was referring to is for software source control, where the issues are different. For example, detecting changes between versions, or merging or back-porting text file changes from one version to another. The most popular system for that is probably CVS, which is open source. —
