It would be helpful to know more about the image you’re working with. The method needed can vary from image to image.

For instance:
What color is the hair now, and what color does it need to be? What kind of background is there, plain or busy? Is there contrast between the hair and background?

There are some tutorials on the web for masking hair using channels. One of these may help:

Also, here’s one on changing hair color:

It is much easier to suggest solutions when you know nothing about the problem.

Me? because I have been using my own technique after many years of practicing so it’s hard for me to switch. But if anyone wanna learn Masking then I would suggest the Video Tutorial by Lynda called "Mask & Channels" (not the whole title but very close) which covers lot of detailed information (most I tried before but didn’t get to some final step’s).

I don’t own the DVD but I saw it at my nephew’s place and I think it’s a good one.

WHAT YOU Want is not called etching (etching refers to a type of filtering that resembles etchings>> a type of print made from carved wood or linoleum)

try MASKING
or extraction

recommend russellbrown’s tutorial advanced masks
