Hi,
A friend asked me to create him a banner for his web site colored #573112. So I did and I used the same color with a gradient. I controlled everything before sending it, but the surprise was complete as he integrated the banner on his site! The color was completely different. So I made the following test: I opened a new 1000 x 1000 px 300 dpi sheet in PS and filled it with #573112. Then I saved it as *.PSD, re-opened it again – nothin happened, means the color was still the same. Then I saved it as a JPEG after reducing it to the background. I controlled it before saving. The color was still #573112. Then I opened it again and: The color turned to #583112. This drives me nuts! How can it be that colors change while using it only in Photoshop? I use PS 7.1 – can somebody help me or explain me this phenomen? Thanx
Yves

Turn off color management for that document. Browsers are not color management aware.

Color Management is OFF. For RGB: OFF, for CMYK:OFF. Everything is OFF. Did you try to reproduce it?

I controlled if the color changed before I saved it.So I knew that between my save and the reopenig the error occured. If you take the color picker you can control the color. First you pick it up, then you doubleklick on the picked color.

or when I was inadvertently working in cmyk.
will watch this thread as I am curious myself…sorry not to be more help.

Your experiment correctly reflects the fact that jpeg does not retain exact color values, and can change individual channel values by a percent or so.

There are a number of ways to deal with this. One way is to use gif format instead of jpg, and save to web safe colors. This should allow you to hit the nail on the head. Another tactic would be to change the page layout, and save your image in a table in a frame that helps it blend in better – for example adjacent cells designed to help your image blend better into the web page’s background.

Do you know about color management ? The stuff for the web should be in sRGB (The colorspace of an old substandard monitor). This is what the browser etc assumes. Don’t expect Microsoft products to use Microsoft technologies like ICC/ICM.

To get exact colors, you should also use GIF rather than JPEG, as JPEG does compression and thereby alters colors. PNG is also an option. —
