more about wierd layer styles…

I can create a set of layer effects on one layer, use -copy style- and then -paste style- to apply to another layer. use this all the time, works great.

BUT if I copy the style from one layer to a layer in another document, I get distorted effects. (i.e. a 3 point stroke and 5 px drop shadow becomes a 17 pt stroke and 35 pt drop shadow on the new document)

I recently created a layer style for a website image (stroke, shadow, bevel) and added it to my styles pallette, then created an action that adds that style at the end of a series of steps. And I get the same darn thing… when the action is applied, the effects are exaggerated, and obviously looks awful.

Is there some setting I am not understanding, regarding applying a layer style accross different documents?
This is becoming increasingly frustrating as I often need to run large batches for web photo galleries, etc and this makes it all but impossible to use the batch actions.

Thanks for any input… I have to figure this out!

Sounds like your documents have different resolution settings. When you create a style in a 300 dpi document, and paste it into a 72 dpi document, this is what you’d expect to happen.

nope – guess I should have been more specific… these are identical images – resolution, dimensions, etc
any other ideas?

Strange. I just did a quick test, and if I copy and paste a layer style between two 300 dpi documents, all goes well. If I copy a layer style from a 300 dpi document and paste it into a 600 dpi document, all style values are doubled. Are you perhaps trying to paste layer styles onto a text layer with different text size than the original document where you made the styles?

Johan – you got me on the right track, and I think I found it.

Apparently when I created the style in the first place, and inserted it into my styles palette,
I was working from a 144 dpi image, which gave me the wierd settings on a 72 dpi image.

Anyway, thanks very much – you got me thinking straight, and I think I have fixed it now.
