Although I’m pretty comfortable with the basic stuff that might occur while working in a wet photo darkroom, I’m new to the digital effects.

Specifically, I’m trying to improve a scenic shot with a dark foreground and light sky. I created a layer for the foreground and made adjustments, but the demarcation between the foreground and sky now is harsh and needs smoothing.

What are some of the options for blending the two layers? (Yes, I have several books, all of which are the size of your average metropolitan phone book, but I thought the NG would have some great suggestions as well)

MacBook Pro 16” Mockups 🔥

– in 4 materials (clay versions included)

– 48 MacBook Pro 16″ mockups

What are you willing to pay for that info?

I don’t know if this works for everybody, but I think it should. I simply set up my two layers, highlight the top one, click on the Set Blending Mode area (under layers tab where is normally says normal) and spin the wheel on my mouse.

You’re close. Make the Selection, just as you have already done. Use an Adjustment Layer, to make the corrections, with that Selection active ( marching ants). Then make that Selection active in your Channels Palette. There you can soften the edges of the Selection, which is an Adjustment Layer Mask. You can paint in, or erase out, areas of this Selection with a soft- edged brush. You can use Filters, like Blur>Gaussian Blur, on the mask, or just the edge of it.
