Is there an easy way to select areas of continuous or
smoothly varying tone (pixels with very low variation from their neighbors)?

Thanks.

Try Select>Color Range and adjust with the slider.

Another more complex (but arguably more effective) method is to analyze the channels and pick the one that has the best contrast in the tonal range you’re trying to isolate.

Copy the channel and name it "mask". Use the levels slider to push the tones until the color(s) you need to isolate stand out. Use an eraser or soft paintbrush to refine the selection area.

Go back to the composite image, load the channel "Select>Load Selection" and bring it in. From there you’re on your own, since I don’t know what it is you’re trying to do.

If the tonal gradations are still giving you trouble, repeat the process as above but create two new channels, using the two best contrast channels already in the image. Do a new Channel Calculation and combine the two channels into a single mask for the target colors/area.
