What’s the symbol on the bottom right of the layer thumbnail seen here http://personal.atl.bellsouth.net/f/o/foutsc
that looks like a "foreground/background" button? How do I get rid of it? I have PS CS3.

Hi Zilla,
That means your layer is a smart object. Lots of cool things can be done with smart objects. Smart objects can be many different things and can launch other applications like Illustrator or Adobe Camera RAW. Best to check the manual for all the details.

Ok, thanks. I always open as smart objects (as default) so that makes sense.

Hey Zilla,
How are you doing that? That’s something I would like to do. It would save me some steps if I did not have to ‘place’ my vector and raw files as smart objects. I have found the ‘open as’ to be completely useless.
Thanks,
Ron

I shoot in raw format, and when I open my files, either in Bridge or PS, there’s a "link" just under the image in the Camera Raw screen; click on that and a menu appears with a select button that says "Open in Photoshop as Smart Object."

I’m not seeing it. What version of PS are you using?
Thanks

under the image in the RAW screen there is a line with the details of the image. Click on it , it opens the "workflow options" pop up box. There is a tick box there to open as a smart object.

BTW CS3 Ver 10.0

No, apparently this is another of Adobe’s attempts to get me to upgrade from cs2. It would be nice but I have a system now that isn’t too bad.

Thanks,

holding down the Shift-key will toggle between Open Object & Open Image. Handy sometimes.

That’s indeed what I do if I want to open the image as a non-smart object.
