This will not work if the original layer extends beyond the canvas of the image. It will crop the portion of the layer that is selected to the bounds of the canvas.

I find it better, and faster, to create a new document of the same size as the original, then just use the Move tool to drag the layer from the original straight into the new.

When you use the File->New command, you can click on the Window menu while the New dialog is open and choose an image you already have open. This will automatically fill in the New dialog with all the parameters of the image you chose.

File>Scripts>Export layers to files.
But first, you hide all the layers you don’t want and check ‘Visible layers only’ in the script-dialogbox.

Image | Duplicate then File | Save As… . But I usually want more than 1 layer *and* a similar file name and the same directory.
