I suggest a Wacom tablet
a small one would suffice for small illustrations
medium and large are quite for more commercial use
I have a medium one and I like it!
🙂

go here http://www.wacom.com/tabletwizard/index.cfm
it will help you determine which one you need

remember…drawing with a mouse is like drawing with a brick! 🙂

Can you hold and use a pencil? If so a Wacom would be great. Either a Graphire or Intuous. I have been using them for years and never use the mouse. The newer Wacom styluses are fatter than the old ones and most find them easier to handle.

I’ve a Wacom Intuos 2 – don’t use mouse much, mainly the pen. Much handier, but if you have any difficulty with pen handling also, how about drawing a path and converting it to selection? Whatever pointing method you use, you just need to click on the edge and drag adjust the curve as you go along it, very precise (can be slower though). Doesn’t matter if the pointer wanders in between the clicking, and you can return to adjust and add points whenever you need to. Zooming in helps here too. You can save and return to modify the path too as needed, making new selections from it.

Personally I’ve had an annoying problem with my I2 and PS6 (don’t know anyone else having this) – the pen keeps crashing Photoshop suddenly, so I have to use the mouse 🙁
Have the latest drivers and updates, did re-installs and fresh installs, on two computers (98SE and XP Pro). No help. Suggestions, anyone?

Along with the good answers to your question, I’d suggest doing a Google. Groups search for "tablet" in the Photoshop News Groups, as much has been discussed regarding sizes, features of models/types, etc.

I agree that mousing in PS is poor, but still use my M$ wheel-mouse for mouse related work, while using my Wacoms for all Photoshop work.
