Hi

Is *anyone* else as frustrated as I am with brush identification amd management in PS? I am sure that I am not working with the best tools coz it takes so long to find the appropriate brush.

I have a great freeware font manager that i can scroll through to see all my fonts at various sizes and can categorize according to type, how come there is nothing like this in PS?

Sorry for the rant – but it seems like they give you the goodies but make it near impossible to use them with ease!

Any suggestions (other than the preset manager) would be gratefully received.

sorry – can’t help with a brush manager, but I would really like to check out the font viewer utility you mention… care to share a link, or perhaps email me directly? (from site in signature)
thanks

Really obscure isn’t it? It’s one of the most frustrating elements of PS for me too. I use lots of different brushes and it is a TOTAL pain having to scroll through that stupid list to pick the one I want. The whole way it is managed is really… well /outdated/.

Adobe does an excellent job of adding new and very half assed features to Photoshop. For example half done, half assed features include…

History – Can’t save it with your document, Can’t truly edit it in a linear way and you can’t save it as an action.

Brushes – They don’t look like natural media, the entire brush system is hard to use and the organizing capabilities suck.

Actions – No logic processing capabilities, Can’t protect the source code from prying eyes and modification, no real way to debug, no real way to edit.

Scripting – Half-assed documentation, add on plug-in instead of part of Photoshop, hard to use languages that make it anything but a good alternative to actions, designed for a high end programmer and not a graphics designer to use. No way to protect source code from prying eyes or modification.

Filter Gallery – Slower than a dead postman in a snow storm, no layer blending modes for combining the various filters together, no opacity controls, not all of the filters are included in it, no way to turn the thing off and go back to the old filter interfaces.

File Browser – Slow, unreliable, slow. Poor feature set for managing and cataloging your images, can’t be docked, can’t be moved out of the main Photoshop application window, can’t be resized to something more usable, things come up over it with no way to dock it to the side. Did I mention it was slow.

These are some of the examples off the top of my head.

I actually don’t use lots of brushes in PS because I use Painter – but, have you considered making your brush groups – I’m sure that you must have a number of brushes you use all the time and it does make life easier. OTOH, you’ve probably already done this, but I thought I’d mention it anyway 🙂

Why would I want to do that. What we need to do is get Adobe to finish the job. After all without us their customers Adobe has nothing. The big problem stems from the fact that Adobe doesn’t listen to what its customers want. Or, at least not very often. Especially when you consider that most of the problems and half done features have never been improved or looked at again after they were added. How long has it been since Adobe did any work on History? Actions? Yet when you look at their feature request forums you see a lot of people that want the weaknesses fixed.

I think what Adobe is afraid of most is that to do most of the fix ups that need to be done they would almost have re-write the entire program. At least that is what Chris Cox spouts as the reason the weaknesses don’t get fixed is. That are it "Can’t be done." Even though the same and better features are available in money other programs.

I am beginning to think Adobe has no interest in Photoshop except for what they can milk out of it with quick and dirty upgrades. They have done any real major overhaul work to it in some time. Shame really.

I couldn’t give a damn about the brushes – if I want to use brushes I open Painter which does it properly.

Very true, Painter has excellent brushes. But, then that wasn’t what we were talking about. We were talking about Photoshop adding features but not adding complete or well done features. Adobe finally adding "natural media" brushes is a great example, people asked for them, they add them and then they suck.

Don’t get me wrong I love Photoshop, but I think like Warner Brothers and their DC Comic properties and Paramount and their Star Trek properties Adobe doesn’t deserve Photoshop if they can’t do a better job adding to it.

Understand. But then, personally, I prefer using the right/best tool for the job. Photoshop is undoubtedly the best image editor for raster images. To me, it isn’t a painting tool and never will be. So the brushes are immaterial. I really don’t use them, nor am I ever likely to. YMMV 🙂
