Does Photoshop CS support Nikon Coolpix 8700 RAW format? I am using PS 7.0 and I have to convert my 16-bit raw files I pull in with Nikon View into 8-bit to remove the background, etc. and incorporate the image into a PSD file. I’m losing all the benefits of the RAW format. It looks like Photoshop CS will allow me to edit the 16-bit file (cutting out backgrounds, scaling, etc.) but I don’t see my camera as being supported. I don’t want to upgrade unless it will work with the 8700. Does anyone have info?

You may want to check the separate Camera Raw sub-forum, just up at the top of this forum. The 8700 is supposed to be included in the next update of ACR.

Thank you for your fast reply. Perhaps you can clarify something for me? When Adobe talks about "supporting" a camera, does that mean the plug in supports a direct upload from the camera in raw file format or does it mean it can read a raw file generated by that camera? The reason I ask is that Nikon View pulls in the raw image and saves it to my hard drive right now. Photoshop 7 also open that same image off the hard drive.

Victoria,

I’ve never tried it, but I imagine you could open an image in ACR right from the camera. The camera should just appear to the OS as a removable drive.

However, that’s not the recommended procedure. Everything I’ve read says it’s best to use a card reader to upload the raw files from the memory card to your hard drive, and then open them in Photohop Camera Raw from the hard drive.

When they say a particular camera is supported, it just means that the plug-in is able to open that particular camera’s raw files.

It is unlikely that PS 7.0 can read the raw files from the Coolpix 8700. There is no chance that Adobe will ever supply any new software for PS 7.

As it happens, though, Nikon supplies a plugin for my D70 as part of the Nikon Capture program. This plugin works quite well with PS7. Perhaps they also supply a plugin for the Coopix 8700.

I use Picture Perfect (which is the update of Nikon View) to download from the D70 to the directory of my choice. I use it merely as a matter of convenience because Picture Perfect can delete the images off the D70 while it is downloading. This just saves me a little time.

As an interim solution you can download Nikon Capture and use it for 30 days free. It’s $99 if you buy it. Hopefully by the end of the 30 days, Adobe will have released the next version of ACR.

It means that Photoshop reads the RAW file.

Photoshop can’t support direct camera connectivity… (and you shouldn’t be using it – copy from the flash card to the hard drive!).

Two quotes;

1. "Photoshop can’t support direct camera connectivity… (and you shouldn’t be using it – copy from the flash card to the hard drive!)."
2. "Everything I’ve read says it’s best to use a card reader to upload the
raw files from the memory card to your hard drive, and then open them in Photoshop Camera Raw from the hard drive."

I’m a bit new to this but this is the first I have heard of this. Do you mean that you will actually get a better image if you download to the computer this way rather than direct from the camera?
Thanks,
Ben
