Photoshop CS, Windows XP Pro, Dual Xeon 855 w. 1 G ram, Epson 2200 & Kodak 8500 printers. The following will be part of a larger action.

How can I create an action to draw a line on the outside of a picture.

The process is 1. Select>All. 2. Select>Modify>Border> set pixels. 3. Brush>paint around the edge. 4. Deselect.

How do I get Photoshop CS to perform the above in an action. I can preset the pixels and brush color.

Thank you. Terence F. Treppa

Convert a selection to path, and then stroke that path with the brush. Brush strokes themselves aren’t "actionable", as it were…

Oh yeah… Invert the selection before you convert it to a path. I missed that step.

Alternative 1:
* Layer > New Layer (in case you don’t like the results) * Select All
* Set foreground color to whatever you like
* Edit > Stroke (inside, 3 px, OK)
* Deselect

Alternative 2:
* Layer > Layer Style > Stroke (chose your settings)

Don’t you love choices? πŸ™‚

I’d agree that both of those are alternatives to what Terence suggested, however… they don’t perform the same thing that my posted method does.

I just want to point out that my method allows all the functionality of the brush palette to be used, where with the stroke methods, you are basically stuck with straight lines using either of the two alternatives.

(Who knows, though, maybe that’s what he wanted… πŸ˜‰ )

Johathan and Danny,
Thank you for your suggestions. I’ll give them both a try. Which ever one works will save me a ton of work. I process many photos with automated actions. I like the pixels on the edge of a photo. Adds a bit of elegance and focuses the eye on the picture.

Good point, Jonathan. Stroking the path with the action-selected brush definitely opens up some alternatives.

He didn’t mention brush strokes/characteristics per se, so I was ass-u-me-ing he meant just a simple, no frills, solid border.

All the bases are covered now.

Johathan and Danny,
I settled on the following – a simple no frills, solid border in black.
1. Select All ^A
2. Select>Modify>Border (5×7= 2 pixels, 8xa0=4pixels, larger 6 pixels
3. Make selection a path under the path tab an icon will do or use the arrow to the right.
4. Set Path to foreground color pre set to black.

You get some odd colors on your screen but when you do a save and reopen the border is solid black and prints solid black.

Thanks again.

Have a folder containing 100+ JPEG images in the Adobe RGB color space. Would like to change all to the sRGB color space with one action. What are the steps to setup and run such an action using a Windows XP PC?

See the "Batch" command.

Just make an action that opens a file, converts to sRGB, and saves the file.

The use Batch and tell it to override open and save commands.

All my requests for "frames" return a burnished aluminum frame, doesn’t batter if I click "wood" or whatever. Any help for me?
