Hi,
I just got Photoshop and tried to use it for the first time and to my utter amazement, JPEG format is NOT available in the Save As command! GIFF, BMP, TIFF and others are there, but not JPEG. I then followed the instructions for adding the JPEG 2000 format, but it does not appear either. My other image programs do not have this problem.

Specs: Win XP pro, 1gb ram (Corsair DDR400), AMD Athlon 64 3000+, ATI All-in-wonder 9600 Pro, ABit kv8-Max3.

Ideas?

only formats that support the current image type will be available. for instance, if you have layers in your image, jpg isn’t available as it doesn’t support layers. or index color, etc.

Dave, I’m able to do a jpeg "save as" even with a layered file. I just get a warning that it must be saved as a copy, and the resulting file is just a flattened version of the visible layers.

Not much help to the original poster though.

Aha,
I figured it out myself just after posting. I used the Image>Mode>grayscale command to change it from the "indexed color" mode it was scanned in and then JPEG and many other formats were available. This was never an issue in LView-Pro with the same scanner settings.

Obviously the extra sophistication of Photoshop requires some extra skill, but still there’s a program design/feature issue.

At the very least, the Help files should address the topic.

Better yet, all formats should be available in the Save As command and then, if the current image "mode" wont work in that file format Photoshop should walk you through the process and options for converting it. IMHO. Actually, that’s in my opinion as a human factors engineer.

So: do Adobe’s programmers comb these forums for such issues and suggestions or do I need to post this as a feature request?

Let’s see, dozens of file formats, each with their own idiosyncracies (having to do with more than just the colour mode; alpha channels, layers, paths and other things are proscribed by some file formats). I’m sure the software engineers would love to implement this and I’m not sure I’d want to use it once they do.
