I have a recurring problem of not being able to delete files from my Windows XP system, which include Illustrator 10 and Photoshop 7 files. I get a message saying "Cannot delete "filename": It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that mgiht be using the file and try again."

What could be causing this problem?

psicon.dll is interacting with windows explorer. apparently explorer has some bugs that ms refuses to fix that cause problems with this dll. it controls thumbnail display of psd files in windows explorer. if you delete or rename it (psicon.old will do) then restart, the problem will go away, but so will psd icons. if this isn’t a problem for you go ahead and rename it. note that ps cs ( 8 ) removed the dll altogether.

Will this eliminate the problem with Illustrator 10 files too? That’s really what’s been giving me trouble.

Evan,

Then you would need to do the same with aiicon.dll.

Where would I find aiicon.dll?
I think it’s under C:/Program Files/Adobe/Illustrator … but am lost from there.
