hey everyone..well I’m REALLy inexperienced in using adobe photoshop. I’m trying to follow this tutorial: <http://www.phong.com/tutorials/grid/> which is supposedly a beginner’s tutorial, but I can’t even get this right. If you read that page, the tutorial is basically just asking me to make a shape, define it as a pattern, and then set that pattern on my page to make a grid. Well, I’m stuck at step 3, where it asks me to define the pattern. If you’re looking at the tutorial, notice that it has me make a selection around this white outlined box, and then move it up and to the left one pixel. Right after that I’m supposed to go to Edit>Define pattern. But the problem is, all my pattern is at that point is a black box. My selection of dotted lines is simply around a black box, so when I "define my pattern" all the pattern is, is a black box. If someone could help me out, I’d appreciate it! thanks.

David,

After contracting the selection and filling with black, you have a black square surrounded by a 1px white border.

When you move the selection area 1 px up and 1 px left you have a selection of a black square with a 1px white line on the top and left edges.

That is what you define as a pattern.

David,

The tutorial doesn’t ask you to make a selection around a white box. You make a selection and fill is with white using the paint bucket and then contract the selection one pixel and fill with black. This leaves a white outlined box. Next you nudge the selection one pixel up and one pixel to the left with the arrow keys and define as a selection.

I hope this helps but you need to use the tutorial in conjunction with the manual which came with Photoshop and the on line help for and explanation of the features used.

Ken
