Anyone have a recommendation? In the past I’ve looked at the Wow! series, and it was pretty good, but the best one I’ve seen to far (for my use of the product) is the Photoshop Book For Digital Photographers. Has that been updated for CS? I can’t seem to find it…

About the only one out so far is Scott Kelby’s "Down and Dirty". There is a "Dummies" and learn CS in "24 Hours", but can’t recommend ’em. The "official" Adobe tutorial book is due out later this month. Most of the other books will hit in January and February (including the "Digital Photographers" one you referenced).

If you know Photoshop 7, you’ve got 90% of CS mastered…or like me…enough to get into trouble.

I’ve tried many books, but the best (in my humble opinion) is Adobe Photoshop…Artistry (Haynes and Crumpler). The CS version is due out Jan 20. It presents a series of lessons with an accompanying CD containing all the images (this is nothing new by now), and it’s a good rigorous course (hope those terms aren’t contradictory). Also, it’s probably not as useful for people already up on Photoshop who just want a quick course on the improvements in CS.

Most of the books won’t be out until February or so.

I’ve been underwhelmed by most of what I’ve seen so far. Two which I wanted to like, but can’t really rave about are Down and Dirty CS and Photoshop Show,

Kelby’s Down and Dirty-which folks either like or don’t–has some useful tricks but doesn’t really focus on the new features much, Russell Brown’s Photoshop Show has a lot of good info, but is so quirky that serious users (which is, I guess, the audience it was written for, because it is NOT a beginner’s book–the first exercise in the book jumps straight into channel editing ) may not take it seriously. This last breaks my heart, because being in RB’s live classes is a wonderful experience, but the incredibly unselfconscious zany creativity that he has in person comes off contrived and just somehow strange in print.

The 2 best I’ve seen so far are Daniel Giordan’s Art of Photoshop (for advanced users) and his How to Use Photoshop CS (for beginners) Art of PS can seem a little pretentious at times, but it has both beautiful illustrations and good core skills info. How to Use is basics— both how and why– well and attractively presented

Ben Willmore’s update to Studio Techniques won’t be out until after Christmas. When I talked to him in Oct. he said the new book would have 4 completely new chapters in addition to the updated parts….so I’m looking forward to seeing that. Ben has a straightforward and practical style, and his version 7 book is a good investment.

When you bought CS, you should have gotten a training CD with stuff from Deke McClelland…..And, if you commercial work, Bert Monroy has a new book due out first quarter 2004 "Commercial Photoshop CS"— those 2 should be worth checking out.

Very few books have been updated for Photoshop CS just yet. A bunch more should be released in early 2004 (which is coming real soon now!). The WOW! book is usually not one of the first books updated for new versions (in fact, in the past, the WOW! books have been
quite late to the game).

If you’re looking for a book on Adobe Photoshop, you ought to check out the Photoshop Zone web site:

http://www.photoshopzone.com

It’s a web site dedicated to in-depth reviews of books on Photoshop and web graphics, featuring detailed reviews and LOTS of information on Photoshop books. It’s the most comprehensive and authoritative source of information on Photoshop books available anywhere.

There are so many books available on Photoshop (I know, I’ve got virtually all of ’em), but there’s no single book that’s always going to be "best" for everyone. There are certainly some books that are better than others, but so many different kinds of people
(beginners and experts, "artistes" and propellor-heads) use Photoshop for so many different things (print, web, video, fine art, you name it), that only you can decide what’s the "best" book for you. But you can find the information that you need to make an informed
buying decision at the Photoshop Zone web site.

Online for almost 10 years(!) and updated recently, the Photoshop Zone website was created to help Photoshop users make good, informed choices when they go shopping for a Photoshop book. Many users have found it very helpful over the years. Check it out yourself and
see..I think you should find exactly what you’re looking for.

Hope that helps,

-David
