I’m a new Photoshop Elements user. I’m looking for a newsgroup in which I can discuss Photoshop Elements with other users. This newsgroup (comp.graphics.apps,photoshop) as well as others I’ve looked at, seems to focus on the full-blown CS2 and CS3 versions of Photoshop. Is there another newsgroup that focuses more on Photoshop Elements?

As an amateur photographer, I don’t think I need to spend $600 for the full version of Photoshop. At present, I’m very satisfied with the amazing capabilities Photoshop Elements offers. I bought my copy of Photoshop Elements 6 on sale at Costco for $49.99–that’s a bargain price for so much capability.

Adobe provides great support for Photoshop Elements in the company’s web site. But unanswered questions remain.

Is there a newsgroup already established that focuses on Photoshop Elements? If not, perhaps we should create one.

If you have specific questions or problems, you’ll find more help in the Adobe Photoshop Elements Forums:
http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.eeb4f8b/ and subscribe to the 1st, 2nd, and 4th on the list.

You won’t find much in the way of tips on how to do it better, but you will be able to ask questions about things you don’t know how to do. The forums are more of a problem-solving venue than anything else.

This newsgroup, and alt.graphics.photoshop, go further into how to do certain things. Since the readership ranges from Elements users to users of different versions of the full Photoshop, you won’t be able to do some of the things covered.

I have both the full Photoshop and Elements. Many of the things I learn here can be done in Elements.

You want adobe.photoshop.elements. Your server may or may not host it, if not use ‘news.aioe.org’. They also carry other adobe groups as well as other elements
groups.
Hope this helps.

Show-off. I paid the full 180 bucks for Elements 5, and then had Elements 6 come out 4 days later. No refunds – another 180 bucks.

I don’t remember what it was but PSE had some kind of serious limitation. It was a deal breaker but I can’t quite put my finger on it. Maybe it was layers?
Anyway, glad your happy with it and that you got it at a good price.

Good luck,

That didn’t sound very nice. I wasn’t thinking. PSE is very powerful and has a ton of very useful features – no sarcasm intended.

Lack of "Curves" (in the form used in PS) and Lab Space, probably. Not a deal breaker for all.

Anyway, glad your happy with it and that you got it at a good price.

PS 6.0 retails for $99 from Adobe (I don’t know where Mike got such a "deal") and can be found for $50 to $60 (legit) without much trouble. You can buy 5.0 (legit) for about $40.

That was it. In retrospect that was a pretty amateurish take on things. After I got CS2 it took months of hard work before I even needed to look at curves. I think I was looking for excuses to justify the cost of the fancier version.

After thinking about it, the 99 dollars actually sounds more like what I paid – twice though 🙁

Thanks, guys, for all the useful information. I’ll be looking at the web sites you suggest.

Regarding the limitations of PE, the one I’ve been concerned about is the omission of Curves. However, a free substitute (SmartCurve) for Curves is available from http://free.pages.at/easyfilter/curves.html as a plug-in. It seems to work well and might even be superior to Curves provided by Adobe in the full version of Photoshop.

Adobe forums has a newsgroup just for Photoshop elements, also for everyother one of there programs. I used to lurk on the elements one untill I upgraded to Photoshop CS2,CS3. There was a large number of very good and helpful people there.
Go to Adobes web site and look for user to user groups.
