I want to design a 3ft x 7ft banner. Do I need to design it at that size for the printer service or do I make it smaller and the printer takes care of the sizing? If I design it at 300 resolution at the large size, the file is HUGE so I know that can’t be right. Any help on designing for large prints is greatly appreciated.

Thanks 🙂

Topic very much like this has been up recently in this group, in a thread named ‘working with large file, for oversize print’, check that out and ask for more if something is still unclear.

As with most jobs, consult your printer first. I would go to a local sign shop using the latest technology in digital printers.

My solution: plotters, find a printing office that has a plotter.

plotters cannot typically print to exterior banner material. That is why contemporary sign shops are the place to start.

contact your local sign shop and talk with them about their requirements for input on their banners. Typically they have software that will upsize your picture to the size of their banner requirements. There are also some banner manufacturers available on the net, with a little search, you could send them e-mail inquirys. Some will even send you samples of their printed banner material at different dpi.

Don’t print it at 300 ppi. Banners are for viewing from far away. 300 ppi is for viewing up close. Cut it down to a third of that. Go to the mall and look at large prints and stand-up displays, or even the bank or grocery store. Look at the resolution up close. It’s not that great. Step back and it looks fine. That’s the secret.

Is the banner something that can be done in a vector program like Illustrator? The file size would almost evaporate completely.
