Worse than that: it sometimes works when I just start out, but then just as suddenly it stops working. PS 7.01, 756 mb ram. And I’ve reinstalled more often than I like to think of. I hope someone can help.

Press Alt+Control+Shift during your next launch of Photoshop to dump your preferences. Click OK when asked if you want to do this as it will restore them to the default settings as when you first opened the program.

I’ve tried that. Nothing happens. I’m not asked if I want to do it. Nothing. I’m running Windows. Is your remedy for the Mac?

Alt+Control+Shift on a PC should become Command+Option+Shift on the Mac.

In what way does it suddenly ‘stop working’

Do you mean that when you hold down the Alt key to sample an area you have a problem ??
If so it may be a keyboard or keyboard driver fault.
