hi, I need to re-install my Photoshop CS3 b/c the license has expired (as I note in previous post).. I dont understand why this is happening.. of course tech-support at Adobe is closed today.. I guess the outrageous prices these folks charge for their sw doesn’t pay for tech-support 24/7…

I created a set under Actions, but in CS3/Presets/Actions folder I don’t see the set I created, it has a no. of actions in it that I would like to not have to create again… why is the set I created not in this folder???

thank you..

Do a search of *.atn and you will find out where your Actions are being stored.
You can also phone or write to Adobe for free support if you bought a legal copy of CS3.

Nope, you won’t. Unfortunately, actions are not saved automatically as ..atn sets, unless you do so yourself. Instead, they are saved in some obscure preference file. I believe it’s this one (I’m a Macintosh user, so I have to make a guess at the exact path in Windows):

C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application
Data\Adobe\Photoshop\10.0\Adobe Photoshop CS3 Settings\Actions Palette.psp

Don’t ask me why because I don’t know why, but I can give you some general information WHY you want to use your own folder.

1. Just use Windows Explorer or any file manager to create a folder (like ACTION, or ACTION-2 whatever you like) *outside* of Photoshop directory

2. Copying all your personal Actions to that specific folder.

That’s it! and you can uninstall Photoshop or dedelete the Photoshop folder which won’t effect your own Folder, and you can SHARE the same folder with multiple serverion of Photoshop if you wish.

but I can’t FIND the set anywhere that contains the actions.. I have created two sets, one is called MyActions, I can see that one, but I can’t see other one, called PHOTOS.. I really don’t get that, there’s no difference technically betw. the two..

the action will show up when you re-open PS but unless you specifically save the entire set you saved it to or the new set it won’t stay saved if you reinstall
or change sets

BTW how did you resolve the first crisis of license failed??

Unlike PLUG-INS which is one of the main parts of Photoshop so Photoshop has option to load as DEFAULT setting, when ACTION is an optional.

And like always, you have to manually LOAD each action to Photoshop and it will remember what and where the actions are, or it will saved the information and will load at the begining.

Photoshop has always included few sample actions and the "ACTION" folder is under Adobe\Photoshop\xxsomewherexxx

*BUT* you can keep them on any folder if you wish (I always keep them outside of Photoshop folder).

If you can’t find them then it’s your problem with using Windows (I think Windows has option to FIND any file on system .. I ran into it twice but never use it to remember the name). Also, you just need to find a way (or tool) to find the .ATN extension

Also, I don’t even know or never tried any action comes with any version of Photoshop to know what they are, and as I mention you can CREATE YOUR OWN so you don’t need to find the sample action(s) (unless you need them). So.

1. Create a folder name "MAYA"

2. Copy the actions to the MAYA folder

3. Tell Photoshop to LOAD the action in MAYA folder then you have it.

Like I said; your own action sets will *NOT* be saved in the Presets/Actions folder unless you do so yourself manually. They are stored in the Actions Palette.psp file, which is a preference file and which can be found in a different location.

But Maya, Johan explained twice where it is. Although I must say the file ‘Application Data’ is not to be seen as a default on ‘Total Commander’, which I use.

In any case, that is where your actions are.

Documents and Settings\Username\Application
Data\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\presets\Actions

Little different to what Johan said, because he is a Mac user. Read the path above.
That is where I always save mine from before formatting my hard drive.

You have to save the actions you created:
Open CS3 (Photoshop).. highlight the ‘action’ you want to save… click the little arrow pointing right at the top right of the Action menu for a fly out menu… click save actions … The action will be saved into the Photoshop actions folder so you can find and move it later… Repeat for all the actions you want saved for transfer

Correction: Highlight the action SET. You cannot save individual actions, only action sets (which of course may contain only one action).

Thanks for the correction Johan.. I thought the OP had his CS3 problem solved and could open it.. I guess I was wrong.. The OP can’t get into CS3 to save them anyway.. I have offered all I can. I am stumped now as to how the OP can find and save his actions (sets).. even if the OP finds the action.PSP you suggested, how would he be able to save his few individual actions out of it to be usable later?

He would just have to move the action.psp file to a safe location, reinstall Photoshop and copy the action.psp file back to its original location (where in the installer created a new version, that’s why you lose your actions if you don’t move the file first). That should do it.
