I thought I would post this as it may save someone else time as it took a while to sort it out.
We did an upgrade from CS2 to CS3 at work. We uninstalled CS3 but when using PS CS3 it kept on shutting down when I opened a new document. I could open an image (jpg) but if I tried to open a new doc as well it would shut down.
We looked at the installed programs and it seems CS2 did not uninstall and there was Photoshop elements there as well. We uninstalled both successfully and reinstalled the CS3 suit with the same result. We then uninstalled PS only and reinstalled and still no luck.
Browsing the Internet it was suggested that it may be the Bluetooth mouse and so tried a normal one – still no luck.
It turns out that the problem was that the default printer setting interfered with Photoshop. We switched it to default to Adobe PDF and hey presto!
