On a PC based system… It’s my understanding that Photoshop doesn’t really require an extremely powerful video card, so could I get away with just using the onboard video of my motherboard or should I go ahead and add in some sort of lower end video card like a GeForce 7200? I am only going to use this computer for Photoshop, Lightroom and some basic web surfing/email… and this is going to be a sort of back up computer in case my main one is down or I have too much work and need a second system.

Thanks

lol! Basically should I use onboard video that is hardwired on the motherboard or just get some cheap video card.

But it looks like from the other response I should avoid anything that access system memory so an external card would be the correct choice.

Thanks

Yup, indeed, and correct. A faster processor and sufficient RAM is what you need.

Just upgraded to a quad core from a P4 and the difference is HUGE. OMG it loads in 4 seconds.

I’m happily using my low end GeForce 6200SE with Photoshop CS3

Even that’s not really true any more. RAM used for video isn’t "wasted". Memory and video are both essential – it’s just a question of how you set up the resources.

My favourite supplier doesn’t have any video cards of any type or specification that sells for less than the cost of 1GB of RAM. If your choice comes down to "shall I buy a separate video card" or "shall I buy an extra gig of RAM and sacrifice some of it to video" you’ll do better getting the extra RAM.

Not much in it mind. ๐Ÿ™‚

If someone else is buying tell them you need the hi end vid card that way you get a good gaming rig ๐Ÿ˜‰
yes I need a GE force 3- 9800
Oh yeah

I never use the on-board sound or vid
but I use my box for gaming too

I would still get a decent vid card for the color controls and drivers any 128 card should be fine for PS
as advised go for the extra RAM or faster processor speed PS is more dependent on those

Recommendation – have Matt send the card to you, KW, in exchange for the 1 Gig stick of RAM that Derek recommended. Then everyone’s happy. —
