Cropping can eliminate all parts of the file that lie "outside" the boundaries of the visible file, thereby making the file size much smaller. However, you can still crop an image and opt to retain the extraneous portions by checking "hide" rather than "delete" under the "Cropped Area"
option in the options bar.
