I scanned an image into a .tif file on my Epson scanner. Opened the file in Photoshop and tried to create a new layer to work on. All of the layer menu is grayed out. I cannot click on the new layer button – just get a slash sign. Cannot find anything relevant in Help. What am I doing wrong?
I also tried saving the .tif file as a.psd file but same thing…

16 bit? switch to 8 bit in Image> Mode.

The 16 bit and 8 bit were grayed-out but I did switch from bit map to grayscale and that seemed to do the trick. Thanks for your help. I’m new to photoshop and I’m not really sure what the difference between bit map and gray scale is but it works now so I’m happy for the time being!

All,

Bitmap is a bi-level bitmap. Only black and white with no shades of grey. Greyscale (8-bit) has 254 shades of grey plus black and white
