I am using Photoshop 7.0 at windows XP. I’ve an image of model which shows her hair open. I want to extract model’s image from background with same effect of hair. but I can’t do this with lasso, magic wand or pen tool. It doesn’t select only hair but background part also. What should I do to extract the image and change the background ? Is there any filter or plugin available for this kind of work ?

I’ve read about the knockout feature that’s supposed to be able to this, but I can’t bring myself to learn it (one day…). In the meantime, someone mentioned in another thread that you can try looking at the channels. You might find one that shows a lot of contrast between the hair and the background. If so, copy this layer and paste it into a new channel. Use levels to increast the contrast, and fine tune the mask using the brush tool if needed. This should help to isolate the model. Then you can just use this alpha channel as a mask in layers mode and throw in whatever background in a new layer. Non-destructive AND fun 🙂

Sushil,

The difficulty of the task varies with the complexity of both the background and the amount of hair strands that are scattered apart, but you can use both the Extract tool and Background Eraser to work toward your goal. There will likely still be quite a bit of detailed cleaning up to do.

Dary ! This process is done at professional level at many companies. and they do it very fast… i guess somethin is there that i don’t know about extraction of image…
