Save up for a Wacom Graphire. All the other will work but have, comparatively, terrible build quality and you’ll find they won’t last too long before you have to buy another one.

I have a couple of "Wacom Intuos" (mark 1) tablets and I have NEVER regreted the investment. They are superb. I really want to upgrade to an Intuos 3 soon as I have saved some money!

When you buy a pencil, if you buy a cheap one, you can’t get consistent results and your drawings will suffer because the lead often keeps breaking for no reason because it was smaller to make it cheaper.

When you buy a Wacom tablet you get the choice of size to lower the price. There is no lesser quality, just smaller work area. If on the other hand you buy a larger (non Wacom) tablet, you still may not have the functionality of the Wacom and you will have spent some of the money you should be saving until you get enough for the Wacom!

Oh, did I mention you should beg, borrow or steal a Wacom tablet if you can’t buy one? It’s true. Third time lucky. We can’t all be wrong.

If I am not in error, you can get a 4×5 Wacom for under $100.00 USD. When I first got mine it was worth giving up the ale/pints. The Wacom permitted me to make more money in the long run so I could get something for my honey who is also my CFO.

The problem with buying from the US, unless you actually go there and buy it, is you pay import duty and VAT which often kills any savings made from buying from the US. I want to buy a Canon 20D, but the only way to avoid the import duty is to actually go to the US and buy it. Then, it makes economic sense and the cost of flying to the US is much less than the saving made by buying the camera.

Yes, it’s crazy 🙂

I don’t know anything about the other tablets mentioned, but…yeah…dat’s da one I got. Works great.
Can’t get any cheaper than that I don’t think. If ya can…it must be a toy. Only thing is mine is a Graphire from a few yrs. ago, and it came in different colors. Do they only come in blue with those sickeningly happy people’s faces on them now…?

Though someone recently posted a positive review of their Aiptek, most users of "other" tablets either quit using them, or finally go to Wacom. Have you looked at the Wacom "refurb" tablets on www.wacom.com? I agree with Hecate, that the Wacom is the way to go. Why not buy your last tablet first? I understand budgets, but is it good fiscal practice to buy up to what you " really" need?

Hunt
I support Hunt’s view

If you can go wacom even if it takes a while longer before owning it go wacom

On some things buying budget merely defers (IMHO) buying good kit

You may be able to optimise your spend – say wacom and apps depending on what offers are on at the time

Hint: academic

Hey Hecate…
I just bought some gear in the US. I had a friend buy it and post it to me as a ‘present’. Sure I’m in Australia but the saving was about 20% in including the saving of 10% on GST. What about the VAT? Can you avoid it for a gift? I can buy a 20D in Australia for $2460 AUD. Do your sums, if you can see buying it here and getting it as a gift, is cheaper than buying it in the UK… My company has the facilities to buy one for you and ‘give’ it to you.

It is very obvious that your post does not past via the South African postal ‘services’. You would have bought the ‘present’ for a postal worker if that was the case:-(((

LOL! The problem is the VAT at 17.5%. It can’t be avoided and is charged on all goods entering the EU.

Thank you very much for your kind offer though. I’ll take it under consideration, but I think I’d likely get descended upon by our Customs who are very keen on squeezing every last penny out of law-abiding citizens whilst not having the time to check out the latest terrorist arrvig9ing through the airport with a bag load of Semtex. 🙂

So if I understand you correctly, they should be allowed to take their Semtex into the country as long as they pay VAT and import duty on it? 😉

What do you think I’d have to wear to get a 20D? I mean, besides somebody ELSE’S body?

I’m sure your body’s fine.
