Hello, this may seem like a n00b question, but I am just getting my feet wet with Photoshop. I am using an older version V7.0, so hopefully someone might know how to do this……

Basically, I want to blend two images together, whereas one layer fades at the halfway point into the other.

so just imagine

IMAGE x 260h pixels
IMAGE TWO = 500w x 260h pixels

They both would be sitting on a 500×500 square… as you can see there is a +10 pixel overlap.

🙂

so basically at this overlap junction, I would like to have IMAGE_ONE fade/merge gently into IMAGE_TWO….

how would I do this, like which photoshop steps would I take to make this happen? 🙂

Thank you very much for any assistance here.

Bruce.

There may be better ways to do this, but this is what I suggest (I use Elements.) Put each image on a layer. Using the eraser tool, start erasing the upper image from one side. The lower image will start to show through. Keep erasing carefully, lowering the opacity of the eraser as you get into the area where you want the images to blend. You have the freedom to selectively erase more or less of the upper image so that the elements you want are favored. IOW, you don’t have to make the blend evenly along a straight line.

Hi Bruce,

Put the two images on separate layers. Set the top image to 20 percent opacity, and use the move tool to aligh the images. You will probably need to use Transform to rotate and scale the second image a bit to make it line up. Create a layer mask for the top layer, and use the gradient tool to split the layer mask into a black and white section. The mask should be white for the top image, and black for the bottom image. Use a soft brush to fine tune the mask, paint white to reveal the top image, and press the X key to paint black for the bottom image.

Then you’ll need to use curves on either the upper or lower image to match the appearance. The info palette, and eyedropper samples are a big help, since you can match the numbers rather than depend on a visual judgement.

For those of you who have Elements 3 or later, or Photoshop CS or later, Automate>Photomergecan save significant work. When it works, it’s sweet. When it doesn’t, revert to the manual method described above. CS3 has significant improvements to Photomerge.
