Question about this image – maybe someone can give me pointers

Hello all,

I’m trying to create an image like this:

http://www.barackobama.com/images/bg.jpg

All I mainly want is the white square in the background (with the blue gradient), and the clouding effect around the square. Does anyone know how to achieve an effect like this? I tried using the gradient tool, but haven’t had much success in replicating that square.

Any tutorials or additional information will be super helpful!

layer effects
tiny "f" at bottom of layer palette

make one background layer
make a gradient on it if you want and or some clouds
(more editable: make the gradient on it’s own adjustment layer make the clouds on that layer’s mask)

new layer above
make the square
color to your choice
click f
choose drop shadow
choose outer glow

This looks like it was done with 3d lighting effects, rather than a gradient.
