Is there a simple way to copy and paste within the same picture without creating a new layer?
I’m currently doing a mundane task via repeatedly cycling thru ‘copy, past, flatten image’.
Thanks
Tony

Since layers were added to Photoshop, there has been no way to paste directly without creating a layer. Record the copy, paste and flatten operations as an action, and attach the action to a function key.

There are two ways to do this.

If you want to cut the selection while you move it, make the selection, put the cursor inside the selection and then press the CTRL button and drag the selected area to a new location.

If you want to duplicate the selection while you move it, make the selection, put the cursor inside the selection and then press the CTRL + ALT buttons at the same time and drag the selected area to a new location.

Both these methods move the selected area without creating a new layer.

Hope this helps.

And a THIRD way:
Select and copy. Deselect, and create a selection in the new location. Paste into selection.

Hi Leo,

In CS, CS2 and CS3, paste into creates a new layer with a layer mask blocking any of the pasted image that would fall outside the selection.

Have you found a way to use paste into without creating the extra layer?

I use Photoshop Elements 4. Didn’t know it was different. Sorry.

I don’t think that’s possible.
But just paste as a new layer (CTRL-V) and merge down (CTRL-E) Can be done in 0.2 secs.

I said it only once!
The floating selection!
I completely forgot about it, I find layers much more versatile and there’s always the possibility of flattening/merging afterwards. But thanks for the reminder.
