Hello,

I’m working on creating a banner for an online marketing campaign. I want it to be an animated GIF (just two frames). I’ve never worked with slices before, but in an attempt to minimize the file size I started playing around to see what I could do. I did achieve the desired file size, but was surprised to see that, when I saved the file (Save Optimized As), it saved each slice separately. Is there any way I can get it saved as a single GIF?

Thanks!
Jonathan

Don’t make slices. They are by default separate files. For a GIF animation, you need to put the separate images on different layers, and then use the animation palette.

I have all of my images and text on different layers, and used the animation palette to create the frames. Can I optimize just one layer at a time? When I use the ordinary optimization methods, the file size is either too large, or the images look really bad. I had decided to use slices since that allowed me to use different optimization settings for different parts of the file. Is there any other way to acheive this?

You cannot, to my knowledge, use different optimization setting on the same file … it is one file, after all. You can slice and optimize, as you have seen, but then they are different files.

Are the multiple files really a problem. IR will build you an HTML table that reassembles them all.

I’ll have to check with the site I’m advertising on to see what their guidelines are. It may be that the multiple files won’t be a problem at all, if I build the HTML table like you suggest.

Hi,
I am struggling to get an animated .gif file to work on a web page. When I preview it in Image Ready, the animation works. But if I move the animation onto a page designed for the Web, I simply get the one frame and no animation movement. My assumption is there is some very simple but not obvious protocol that will make the animation work no matter what page it is transferred to. I optimize , so I don’t think that is the issue. Also, when I preview the animation using the preview tab in Image Ready, the HTML file always shows up underneath the animation.
Any advice, suggestions or remedies are much appreciated. Thanks,

I’m not involved in web design, but I have created a number of animated .gifs (mostly banners) that our webmaster has used. I’m not sure exactly what your problem could be, but I can reccommend a couple of things to check.

When you’re finished creating your animation in ImageReady, go to File and click on "Save Optimized As . . ." instead of just "Save As . . ." Then, make sure that "Images Only (*.gif)" is selected from the "Save as type" drop down menu. Then just add the graphic to your webpage like you would any other graphic.

Again, I’m not experienced with either web design or ImageReady, but that’s how I’ve always done it, and it’s worked for me.

Hope it helps!
