hey everyone, i need to make an outline of a roman numeral 3 that I made in photoshop 6.0. I want to make the outline, and then somehow delete the middle part of it, leaving me with only the outline, that way I can edit the outline how I want and the middle will appear transparant. Ultimately, what I want to do is have the outline of the Roman Numeral 3 to appear as if its glowing, I have a grid in the background that I’m going to place it over. But yeah, if anyone could help me out as to how to make the outline, I’d appreciate it. thanks!

If you just want a plain outline, I’m thinking of somehow using layer styles and the outline option, but I’d have to try it to be sure.

If you want a fancier outline, like maybe some wavy lines or shine spikes, you could just make the outline shape you desire and then Ctrl+Click on the III shape (which should be positioned in the right place) and then add a mask.

Have you thought about creating a layer with what you want in the middle of the text, and then grouping the text layer with it?

If I understand what your end goal is, this would allow you to move the layer under the text around, and allow you to get just the look you want. If that isn’t what you are trying to do, what about just rendering the text, and saving the selection. Then you can load the selection and stroke it, fill it or do what you want to it.

Go to your grid background, load the selection and stroke it or fill it. Add the grid below your numbers, then mask out all around the numbers, leaving you with a layer above your grid-layer with nothing but the roman number on it.

The more I’m writing the more I realize I’m not really sure what exactly you are trying to achieve.

babble, babble babble.

Okay, using some of Mike’s ideas, here’s one way to approach it.

Thanks you guys, your tips were really helpful, I’m going to experiment with some of it and see if I can get what I’m looking for. actually, some of you were kind of confused by what I wanted to do, Check out www.photoshoptechniques.com There’s a logo that shows up when the page is loading that has a plasma like look to it. Ignore the plasma effect, the outline of the letters there is what I’m going for for this roman numeral 3. The outline seems to glow, but you can still see the background through the letters. Thanks again for the tips!

In PS 6 > layer style dialog > advanced blending > set fill % to 0 > apply outer glow and/or any other style you like.

Hi, I think the way to go would be to use the Layer->Type->Create outline command, using the path select tool and direct edit tool you can change its appearnce. Next convert the Path to selection and make a mask. At this point you can add outer glow to the layer to give it the radiant look you were describing.

That’s what I was looking for. Thanks for the tip Barry.

Okay, the effect you’re going for might be achieved by using your III as the basis for the outline. I’d probably look for a tutorial on glass text or bubble text (similar to how they do the gel buttons) or watery type fill effect. I believe there are some good actions that can do this effect.

Check the adobe exchange site: Actions <http://share.studio.adobe.com/axBrowseProductType.asp?t=5>

If the action will fill your outline with a semi-transparent effect, then you’re probably set; otherwise, you can control the opacity by bringing down the fill slider on the blending options. Then you could also add a thin white outline, just to make the shape stand out against the background a little more.

Finally, you could add some shimmering highlights behind the entire shape for a "glowing" effect. Good luck!
