Hello

Is the best way to scan an image for print that needs to be resized by: a) increasing the scale via the scanner and scanning at 300dpi or b) scanning at same size and increasing the resolution proportionately eg 1:3 and then resizing to print size in Photoshop by reducing to 300 dpi

or is this effectively doing the same thing

One thin I’d noticed is that a) keeps the file size down

Cheers

The basics of effective scanning can be found at:

The general idea is to be sure you are recovering all of the useful detail on the print and then make final adjustments in Photoshop.

The basic ideas could be:

1. Don’t go beyond the optical resolution of the scanner. (If your scanner makes 600 ppi optical, that means 200% × 300 ppi, 300% × 200 ppi…)
2. Don’t scan good originals in a bad scanner.
3. Don’t scan more data than you need. It’s overkill and expensive.
4. Don’t scan less data than you need. You’ll lose quality.

So… plan your scans or don’t hesitate to rescan if needed.

And they all sum up in:

5. Don’t scan professional work for printed reproduction if you are not really proficient with scanning. Hire somebody that has the equipment and training.

Or, at least read thoroughly 101 scan site <http://www.scantips.com/>, as Gary recommended, and A primer on Image Histograms and curves < http://www.marginalsoftware.com/HowtoScan/tutorial_page_1.ht m>

PS. There’s an special case in (3) where the ‘originals’ are already printed material. Then scanning at ×2 the needed resolution and then downsampling to 50% is a usual practice (among many others) to avoid moirè… But that’s another story.
