Filters in Photoshop CS not working

Hey, I’ve just been given CS to learn by my employer i’ve just been playing with it and when i’ve gone to apply some of my trusty filters lol i can’t select them but in the sample files that come with cs they work and if i open a jpeg but now when i create a new psd can anyone help with this or is this something that can’t be done??? unfortunatly i rely heavily on filter :S

Check the image mode and bit depth for the images you are creating.
