Is there a way to trasfer an image from photoshop to a real canvas with the intention of having it form the basis for a oil or acrylic painting? Thanks for any comments.

http://www.tecphoto.com.au in Queensland Australia do it. I get some of my flowers printed on canvas there. I also did a mock painting from one of the prints by using an artist brush and PVA adheasive. Looks interesting but not quite the "oil painting" look I was after. I tried some of the paint by numbers programs too but eventually settled for plain printing on canvas which looks very nice after the canvas is stretched and varnished.

1) Use a projector to project the image onto the canvas and paint over the
image
2) Print onto an acetate sheet and use an overhead projector to do the same
3) Print onto tee-shirt transfer sheets – iron onto the canvas and paint
over

All of those suggestions should work. Don’t know quite how you paint in the dark or under a projector’s light but I might just try that myself. I’ve been using an inkjet in ‘econo’ mode to put down a feint image and then paint over it. Portraits look very nice. Particularly when I use oils and a stiff brush.

how about projecting the inverse(negative) image and painting the correct color until the canvas appears a uniform gray in a dark room ? This might guide you to some subtleties in the image. Hank

Is this an expensive process?

Thanks for these options broga; they are not so obvious to newbies. 🙂

Loads of ways. You might want to look at using Painter as well. The Painter Wow book gives lots of examples of artists using various transfer methods, some of which are quite involved. For example, printing onto heat transfer paper (and, in this case, then using the heat transfer paper to transfer to leather, then setting the images behind Perspex sheets and painting on the [Perspex sheets giving a multidimensional image).., The only limit is your imagination and the effort you are prepared to make.

Heat transfer, sublimation, or Gicle’e onto canvas.

Examples of Gicle’e:

It must. I’ve been getting prints on canvas from his shop for 6 months. I’d be really interested if he didn’t do them himself but no… I’ve seen his printers in action. He claims to do the canvas stretching at "home". Maybe someone else does it for him?

A friend of mine does printing of images on a coated canvas material regularly. It can produce a very accurate "painting" type image. Regards,

If anyone would know, this company will:

They have some canvases treated for inkjet. They can probably tell you if they could then be used for oil or acrylic.
