This is a question I really should know the answer to, but I don’t! On the layers pallet there are two controls one opacity and directly below is the fill control I have never really used the fill control and not quite sure exactly what it does, maybe someone can tell me or point me to a like where it is described.

Hi MOP,
it can (undermore) be used to make text transparent.
Very handy for making a watermark, for instance.

I guess maybe i’m being a bit thick here, it seems to do the same as the opacity control?
I’m using PS7

A "like where it is described" (sic) would be the User Guide that came with your software. It is clearly explained there.

Whilst it might seem a slightly strange thing to do! I did look-in the User Guide, (That was the copy supplied with the *legal* version of PS7 I have) after I pressed the F1 key!

I could not find an explanation, to be honest it seems to do the same thing as the opacity control.
maybe as you are an expert user, you might be able to tell me the page number in the user guide where it is explained. as I said maybe i’m stupid but I could not find it!!!

Thanks I guess I must be really thick, I had found and indeed read that page, and have just done it again!
I still can’t see any difference between opacity and fill. usually the user guide is quite good but all it says is "In addition to setting opacity for a layer, which affects any layer styles and blending modes applied to the layer, you can specify a fill opacity for layers. Fill opacity affects pixels painted in a layer or shapes drawn on a layer without affecting the opacity of any layer effects that have been applied to the layer."

If you want to change the opacity of a layer AND any style applied to it, you must set the opacity.

If you want to change the opacity of a layer but not any style applied to it, you must set the fill.

Thanks, makes sense.

Thanks I now see the light! so, if for example I apply a drop shadow on text, the opacity will change *both* the text and the shadow, but using the fill, only the text will change and not the shadow
Thanks a lot.

Layer effects don’t diminish when Fill is reduced, but they do when opacity is reduced. Try this. Create some text of anything using a heavy font like Impact or something. Add a drop shadow and reduce the fill to 0%. Note the effect. Now increase fill to 100% and reduce Opacity to 0%. See the difference?
