my son saw me working with photoshop and he said.."cool dad can I learn"

He is 12 years old. and is very interested in computers. is there an absolute beginners guide on the internet where he could start from the beginning?. I feel like it might be too complex for him if i try to show him what i know about masks and layers, .. Im still learning alot myself so i might mislead him or teach him the "wrong" way to achieve a certain goal or project.

Sorry that I don’t have a list of tutorials, or books to get you started with, but don’t be afraid of teaching your son the "wrong way" to do something in PS. Most results have many different paths to completion, and none is "wrong." Some might save keystrokes, or reduce the time a bit, but it is getting to the end result, that matters, and PS offers so very many ways to do that. I’ve been using it professionally for many years now, and am always amazed at some of the workflow suggestions in this NG – "WOW, I’d never thought about doing it THAT way!"

I’d suggest that you choose an image that you wish for him to manipulate, do the work yourself, making notes about the steps you use. Do not be afraid to do it the way you choose – it will not be wrong. Show him the "before," and the "after," and then sit with him, as he works through the process. Each image is a new learning experience. Once he has done several projects with you, he might be ready for Adobe Classroom in a Book, but some of the projects get a bit heavy on the production end of things for a 12 yo. However, after he has cleaned up a few underexposed images, changed the color of the dog’s house, and "planted" grass in the backyard, under the old oak tree with the swing, he just might be ready to tackle some of them.

Most of all, get him involved in doing it, and thinking about the desired end result. For a reward, let him just have fun with an image and do anything he wants to do with it.

1. Encourage him.
2. Don’t assume that anything is too difficult – he’ll soon tell you if he doesn’t understand.
3. Every time he asks a question, find the subject in the help file and go through it with him, explaining anything he doesn’t understand.
4. There is *no* wrong way of doing something in PS, there are only
*different* ways.

Hope that helps,
