I am in the process of learning CS from a book. It keeps telling me to "nudge" things using the arrow keys instead of the mouse. My arrow keys have no effect on the moving of things. Is there something I don’t have set right?

Thx

Hit the V key on your keyboard and make sure the item you want to move is on the active layer. HTH

that didn’t work either. The arrow keys don’t nudge or do anything. Is there a setting on my computer or in my pshop pref’s that would effect this? Normal keys and shortcuts seem to be fine. My arrow keys work fine in other progs.
Thanks in advance.

Hmmm. Should work. You do have something selected don’t you, or are trying to move a layer?
Use the marquee tool (M key) to make a selection anywhere on your image and then press the arrow keys to see if the selection outline moves. If it does, use the move tool (V key) and the selected portion should move relative to the rest of the image when you press the arrow keys. It’s not a prefs thing.

PS. The keyboard shortcuts I mention, M key V key, are for PS6 I’m assuming they haven’t changed for CS.

In article <lPBRd.40079$ says…

To Nudge an object, Layer, or whatever, you must first select the Move Tool ( that little 4 pointed arrow in the upper right of the default Toolbox). Depending on your magnification, you may not see a 1pxl Nudge with the arrow key. If you do not, try Shift+arrow key, which will move your selected item 10pxls. This will confirm that it DID move. Now hit Ctrl-Z (WinPC) to Undo, and go at Nudging with the arrow key only.

Hope this helps,
Hunt

Now I’m totally scratchin my head. It works perfectly in Imageready. I must say, I’m befuddled, if you will.
In some versions of Photoshop, keyboard shortcuts will not work properly until Photoshop is registered. Perhaps you could contact your IT department and make sure they have registered the product, which frequently slips through the cracks in large organizations.
