Crop tool malfunction on full screen mode

I just got the Photoshop CS upgrade and have a problem I didn’t have with Version 7. When I put an image in Photoshop’s full screen mode, after clicking the middle icon near the bottom of the tool palette, using the crop tool becomes tricky. At some stage of varying the crop size, the image suddenly jumps off the center of the monitor. Usually, it shoots upward–leaving only the bottom edge of the image visible and making it impossible to finish the crop. I then have to exit the document, re-open it and leave it in the initial upper left position to be able to crop. What’s wrong?

Ralph,

Pardon me if this seems a dumb question, but did you try reversing the direction of your crop, as if you were stretching the marquee upwards rather than downwards?

Unless the behavior you observe is more erratic than should be the case, what you describe is the normal panning the occurs to bring an unviewable area of the image into view. When your crop or selection marquee is stretched beyond the image window boundary, the panning will occur. I’ve seen this happen at reasonable speeds that permit relatively easy control of the marquee size, as well as such quick speeds that it is more difficult. Since control is rather easy on the PC I’m at right now, which has an integrated graphics chipset, I’m guessing the scrolling rate may be affected at least in part by the performance of your graphics chipset and/or video memory.

The only thing I know to suggest short of trying out a lower acceleration setting for your graphics card is to simply view the image using Fit On Screen so that the entire image is viewable before you start your cropping selection.

Hope that helps,

Daryl

Dear Ralph:
This sounds like something that happened to me once recently…..I would suggest reduce your picture to 50% instead of 100% so that you can view the whole picture on your screen…..THEN make your marquee and crop it. That way, you are not going off the page with no way to find yourself back where you were. I am NOT an expert at PS, but I just got some good answers to my question, so I’m trying to be of service to others. Hope it helps.
Thanks, Deb
