Forgive mistakes I’m new. I’ve read all FAQ’s on Raw and have not found an answer. Running Windows 2000P. Photoshop CS. Raw update 2.2.Using Kodak 14N. Have 2 gigs of Ram. Could not open Raw files from any hard drive. Have 4. Message (Not enough ram). After talking to a great Adobe Tech she found the problem. I had preferences set to usage at 90%. I work some big files. I’m comercial photographer. The solution. The only way for me to open raw files is by changing usage from 90% to 50%. This reduces my memory to 1 gig.No combination of scratch disks (have plenty of room) helped at all. There must be some problem to be restricted by Photoshop to using only half of the memory I bought due to the encouragement of Photoshop for buying as much memory as I could afford. Does any one have a solution?
Thanks for any help you can offer!

Have you tried other settings between 50% and 90% ?

A 64bit version of Photoshop (when we’ll have the OS) is so drastically needed!

It reduces the amount of virtual memory that Photoshop can make permanently resident in physical memory. This setting does nothing to reduce the amount of virtual memory that PS can address.

What you did was enable Windows to use more physical memory. It needs quite a bit to be able to read big files. These files get loaded into a buffer in system space. If there isn’t enough memory for the system to read you files, it won’t. Setting PS scratch space will have no effect.

Pierre Courtejoie,

I’ve tried every setting between in 10 point increments. Even 60% will not open any raw images.

the problem is (we’ve been told) that cs is opening the cr plugin in the same memory space as photoshop itself. I don’t know if there’s any way around it, but if there is I’m hoping it’ll be fixed with an update as lots of people are complaining about it.

dave milbut,

Thanks for the reply. As least I know that I’m not the only one. I will keep a look out for a fix.

Thanks, dave, I must have missed that post.

I’m looking for other users who are seeing a large difference in the amount of time it takes PS CS ACR 2 to convert and open a Nikon NEF file as compared to PS 7 ACR 1. With PS 7 ACR 1, a NEF converted and opened in about 3-4 seconds. With PS CS ACR 2, it takes about 12-13 seconds on my machine. Win2K, Athlon 1.33, 1.5GB RAM.

I realize that there may not be many people out there with this particular set of circumstances, but if you’re seeing it, please post. Maybe we can figure out what else our systems have in common.

Thanks,

Nick
