Getting this error at startup CS will not open,(Memory could not be allocated for the activation process)
I have PS 8.0 CS, OS Windows XP Pro with service pack 1, 27 gig of free space on my 120 gig HD,
512 MB DDR Ram, ATI Radeon 9700 Pro AGP with 128MB,
Once I close the error box PS closes itself, hope there’s an answer? or maybe a patch?

what’s your windows swap file size set to. it should be at least 1.5 times the size of installed physical memory.

My Task Manager shows my total Physical Memory at 523764, System Properties, advanced tab, of my Performance Options I have it set at system managed size, 766MB. Or are you talking about installed Ram which is 512MB?

Im sorry maybe I wasn’t clear in my original post, my problem is with Photoshop 8.0 CS, When at start-up it loads for awhile then I get that error- about the memory. Im not sure what starting Windows in safe mode would do for Photoshop?

start in windows safe mode so you can maybe activate the program. there may be some other program interfering with the activation process and win safe mode will eliminate that possibility.

Tried to start PS in safe mode with the same results, it loads then opens and the error window pops on, that’s it.

no other apps running? anything else with macrovision sw in it? (mx or flash, norton 2004, etc.) there may be a conflict. you may have to call customer support.

I think you had the right idea about safe mode, if it would not start there with just the basics running in the background then there must be a problem else where. Ran across in another forum off a google search, someone with the same problem and it ended up that he got a patch from Adobe, have you heard of anything like this?

I’m about to increase my (costly) Rambus RDRAM RIMM from 640 MB to 1536 MB, and the Win paging file from 1 GB to 2.3 GB. Is this considered a "hardware change" that would require reactivation of PS CS? Am I asking for trouble? At present my PS CS works just beautifully.

if they did, it may have been a custom install to get around activation (i understand the corporate version doesn’t have activation on it.) in any event, if you can’t get it to work through safe mode, you’ll have to call adobe to see what they can do. nothing like that is available for public download.

good luck,

tomaz,

Am I asking for trouble?

yes it’s a hardware change. no. you’ll be fine.

You should have no need to reactive after adding memory. Even if you did it’s not a problem unless you don’t have an internet connection. I’ve had most of the hardware in and out of my machine since installing CS – processor (3), motherboard (2), added extra hard drive, DVD writer, four different brands of memory – without any reactivation requirement. The only thing that has done that has been System Restore or Norton Ghost and then it was a few seconds reactivating.
