My company is asking me if we should upgrade from Photoshop 7 to CS. The upgrade seems relatively inexpensive given past prices… but I figured I’d ask if it was worth it first.

What can CS do that 7 can’t?

If your company’s field is selling meat products you don’t need it. On the other hand if you deal with photography, CS has a few new tools that come handy.
So it all depends what you do.

Exactly! If you work with RAW camera images, that might well be reason enough to upgrade.

Even then I am not convinced. I have a Fuji S7000 and the CS plug-in is not good at all. I use S7RAW or the utility that comes from Fuji. The flip side is that a colleague of mine has a Nikon and the CS plug-in works very well indeed. Extra features that come with CS are useful to me such as the lens blur tool and the highlight/shadow tool. The new file browser helps speed up my selections as well. Overall, as a photographer I’m happy with the upgrade to CS, but I could easily worked on with PS 7. Hobson’s choice.

First question is what platform your company is using. If it’s OS X I’d say you should upgrade even though 7 will run in it. If anything else then think about what features you need. Also consider your machines since CS is more resource hungry than previous versions.

Exactly how doesn’t Camera Raw work correctly with the S7k? I have that and CR works great. It’s the Fuji lite version of CR that I think is lacking.

Hi Ron

I meant that the plug-in, ver 2.4 downloaded from adobe is the one that is lacking. It gives a marked graininess to the decoded raw file in CS. Even tweaking the settings such as luminance smoothing and colour noise, the results still do not compare with the much higher quality that I get from S7raw or Fuji lite, of the last two, S7Raw gives overall the best and consistent result.

Cheers

PS if anyone is interested, I can put a few examples on the web, please let me know. Thanks

John,

Really? I’m gonna have to look again more closely at that. Do you think it’s just the 2.4CR or do you think even earlier versions of CR are not as good as the Fuji lite RAW? I thought the Fuji was much slower in loading the images as well, but could be wrong on that.

When I upgraded to CS, because the plug-in that came with it did not support my s7000, I had to upgrade the plug-in to ver 2.3, and soon after ver 2.4. They are both the same and I can’t really comment on the previous versions. One thing to note, is, that I have good results with a friends Nikon. I am now coming round to thinking that the problem is specific to the Fuji camera, particularly when everyone else is satisfied with CS and no-one on this group has raised any serious issues. I did a quick google search this morning and found this discussion going on which supports my own findings http://www.s5000.net/forums/yaBB/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board= raw;action=display;num=1107745707

Both s7raw and Fuji lite appear to be slower that CS
