I currently have an HP Scanjet 3C which has given many good years of service but is now in need of minor repairs. Do I stick with it or should I look to upgrade and if so are UMAX scanners still regarded as the best of the prosumer market scanners? If not which scanners will give me good results – ie will give good shadow detail.

Were they ever? I owned two and they both sucked terribly

I’d go for a Canon

Umax? Which Umax salesman told you that? 🙂

Go for either HP, Canon or Epson for flatbeds.

I use an older Canon 5000f which works really well.

UMAX will NOT provide drivers or support any OS upgrades. We have a pile of them that went into the bin as a result (could not give them away). Manage to button hole some of the senior marketing types at a seminar. Basically the attitude all the way to the top was … micro-give-a-sh|t.

Epson Perfection Series are a good med cost scanner line.. I have the 3200 Photo and it’s served me well
in my printing/design business. And there are
upgraded models in the Perfection Series out
since I purchased this one.

I agree with Seyler, I’ve used Umax but horrible customer service, Epson Perfection series the Best. Back to Umax, I found that if you go to an overseas site for your drivers they are free, in North America they want you to buy them?

Freshly purchased Epson 4180 perfection scanner. Amazing quality in B&W , transparency and negative, extremely versatile. Excellent quality. It does add a very slight bit of contrast to medium format transparency scans.

Enjoy
