Hello,

I’m considering the possibility of upgrading from PS 7 to PS CS, and I have a question or two.

First, will PS 7 open PS CS files? I know programs aren’t usually "forward compatible", but I’m going to be working with someone who has PS 7, and probably won’t be upgrading. If PS 7 won’t open files created in PS CS it could create problems for me.

Second, I would be interested in knowing what some of you consider to be the top three or four advantages of version CS compared to 7. (I’m a graphic designer, not a photographer, so I’m especially interested in graphic design tools).

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Jonathan

There are many ways of getting a demo version, why not give it a whirl yourself?

Not a bad idea. I’ve just been too busy (and short on funds) up until now to take the time to seriously think of upgrading, so I hadn’t taken the time to try the demo. I just thought I’d get a few opinions from other users in the meantime.

First, most of the file formats are compatible, with the exception of the new format for extra-large Photoshop files. Of course these can’t be opened in PS 7.

I haven’t set my CS up, so I can’t answer what features are most useful. Perhaps someone else can.

Hello,

I just received my upgrade to Photoshop CS. On my computer, I have installed the following: Photoshop 5, Photoshop 6 (upgrade), Photoshop 7 (upgrade), and Photoshop Elements 2.

Since only Photoshop 5 and Elements 2 were full copies, can I upgrade any of the versions and still legitimately install Photoshop CS? I have so much "clutter" on my hard drive that I would like to get rid of some, but do not know what parts are necessary to allow the new upgrade. I would appreciate any assistance in this matter.

Thank you,

Robert,

You do not NEED any previous version of Photoshop installed on your machine in order to upgrade to CS.

If the installer does not find a qualifying product on your system, it will ask you to insert a previous version CD to verify qualification.

If you install CS with a previous version present on the machine, you may remove that previous version at any time from C/Panel>Add/Remove Programs – just say ‘No’ to removing any shared files.
