Hi,
I’m running Photoshop CS on a 1.4 Ghz box with 640 Megs (Rambus) of RAM. I have two IDE drives each on a separate IDE controller. The scratch file is on its own 30 GB partition on a separate drive than the Windows XP swap file.
If I launch Photoshop the system is fine until I close the dialog box that comes up after PS has finished initializing (the one that offers you the chance to goto tutorials and stuff). Once I close this dialog the CPU goes straight to 100% and stays there (PS is using about 53 megs of RAM at this point). This is with no files loaded. If I go ahead and load a file to start working on it the CPU stays at 100% most of the time, but occasionally I’ll notice it going back down to something normal like 4% or 5%. But then if I continue working on the file it eventually goes back up to 100%.
When the CPU is at 100% it doesn’t seem to be rapidly increasing RAM, so I have no idea what is going on.
This problem started about a week ago. I don’t remember changing anything that would have caused this. Though I seem to get Windows Installer updates almost everyday. I don’t know if any of those security patches could have caused the problem. I tried installing XP service pack 1 but it made no difference.
Any idea of what might be wrong here?
Also on another PS performance note. Before this problem was occurring there would be times when PS would just sit there for 30 seconds or so not responding to mouse input or commands, while the CPU was idling at something normal like 4%. I could switch to other programs and they would work properly, but the PS screens wouldn’t even be redrawn if I switched away. What else could be causing this type of bottleneck. (This type of problem was much worse before I added a second disk drive).
Thanks in advance, Derek
