I often encounter a photo that is unevenly lit, say from one side to the other, or from the center out. What is a good way to fix this in Elements 3? I have the feeling that you can somehow do it using layers and the gradient tool, but haven’t quite figured out how.

Regards, Yon

Yes you can. Unfortunately I don’t recall exactly how, something with channels. Sorry. I’ve seen it though.

OK OK On the channels tab below layers, make a new alpha channel & drag the gradient across it then Select > Load and chose that alpha channel. You can delete portions of an adjustment layer with that selection.

Create an adjustment layer, use levels for instance
With the sliders make the dark part of you image "look good", don’t worry about what happens on the rest of the image at that point. Now use a black/white gradient over that layer (make sure you are working on the mask not the image itself, the symbol is a little circle, not the brush)
If you uncheck the link between the adjustment layer and the level rectangles in the layer box you can even move the gradient separately.
